This is by far, the most common questions asked by non-homeschoolers.
“So, how are your kids doing in school?” This is typically the first question I’m asked by someone I haven’t spoken to in a few years or someone I just recently met. I say, “great, couldn’t be happier!” Their response, “that’s great to hear, what grades are they in?” I say, “a few grades.” The smile fades a bit as the confusion over what I just said settles in, the awkward silence begins… (Cricket, cricket, cricket.) I tell them that we are homeschoolers and do not follow traditional grade levels, my kiddos learn at varying levels depending on where their strengths and weaknesses lie. I get the “Oh, okay…” then without fail, I the all concerning question is brought up.
It never fails, this is always a question that comes up when talking to people about homeschooling my children. I have learned over the years to keep my responses short and to the point instead of going off on a long list of supporting details. Don’t get me wrong, some days, I still do. However my typical response is that my kids socialize more on a daily basis than kids who are in a conventional school environment.
They are not restricted to talking only to same-age peers and confined to a building for eight hours a day. One of the beautiful things about homeschooling is that my children are allowed the freedom to talk to people of all ages and walks of life anytime, anywhere.
Truth is, we are hardly ever home during the day. Between therapies, extracurricular activities, homeschool enrichment programs and field trips my kids are out and about living in and experiencing the real world almost everyday.
