What It Really Looks Like... A Glimpse into our Everyday

Updated: Jul 17, 2023

Ok, so I have a “schoolroom”, but it’s not what one would typically think a schoolroom should look like. It's more of a curriculum storage/sensory gym/computer room. In truth, not much actual schoolwork goes on in there unless it’s on the computer.

I tend to let my kids do their work wherever they feel most comfortable on any given day. It could be on the kitchen table, in the car while driving somewhere, on the couch, in a beanbag chair, in a hammock, on the platform swing or picnic table in the backyard, etc... It really does vary every single day. When we do group projects, we usually gather around the kitchen table or a fold-out table in the backyard, for the messy stuff and there is quite a bit of mess.

I homeschool year round which affords me the opportunity to take things slow and spread them out. This may not work for everyone and that's totally ok. As homeschoolers, we choose what works best for our family. Math is the only subject we do everyday because both my oldest and middle child struggle with it, so they need the extra practice. Everything else, we alternate days throughout the week.

We almost never stick to the plan and tend to go off on lots of tangents, so I compensated for that by spending a good chunk of time on each subject. For example, we do science three times a week and usually spend 2-3 hours on it. It's our favorite subject! Language arts and history are done twice a week, sometimes more if we are doing a unit study that incorporates all the subjects. They also have time everyday to learn about whatever peaks their interest that particular week. Then there are some days or even weeks, yes weeks, where things don't go according to plan and we do very little work, if any. I don't stress this though, I let them take a break, I take a break. Flexibility is key!
